Installation of an EV charger at a commercial premises

We were tasked with installing a Rolec EV Quantum car charger in the director’s car park to allow for more cars to be charged during the normal working day. This charger was to be fed from an existing distribution board and using existing duct work that was laid when the car park was built.

Installation

At the start of the job, the first task was to upgrade the distribution board that we wanted to take the feed from as there wasn’t enough ways to accommodate the new charger. This was done by installing an 8 way 3 phase Schnieder board onto the existing feed before the EV charger works needed to be completed. This brought about its own complications as the DB was in a working security office, so with liaising with customer we managed to find a window of down time.

Once that task was done, it was time to install the charger. This consisted of digging a 1mx1m square hole in the car park where the charger needed to be installed to expose the existing duct. This allowed us the to install the cable needed to feed the charger. The base of the charger was then concreted in and left overnight to set.

The next day we returned; the concrete had set around the base so was now time to install the charger. Being a stand-alone charger, it was bolted down on to the base we have already installed by 4 bolts that were pre-threaded into the base. The SWA cable was then terminated into the incoming terminals of the charger and the front was then screwed on.

We reinstated the ground surface around the charger using cold lay tarmac and was smoothed out to give a flat surface using a wacker plate and a square tamping tool for the edges around the charger.

The charger was tested by using an approved test kit to enable us to give the customer an EIC to make sure the installation is safe to use.

All barriers were then removed from the work area and the car park was handed back over to the client for the directors to use again!
