CCTV(closed circuit television) is a system that is installed that transmits a video signal for the purpose of private monitoring. CCTV is placed in areas that benefit from extra security or need 24h monitoring.

Why install CCTV in your premises

  • Safety of employees Protect your employees or family by having CCTV that reduces the risk of crime by deterring criminals.
    • Safety and protection of business / stock – Ensure that your business isn’t vandalised or stock stolen
  • Stock levels Monitor stock levels from anywhere to reduce stock checks
  • Monitoring of equipment The use of CCTV to monitor robotics/ conveyors to ensure equipment is running correctly.
  • Extra security at reduced costs less security patrols needed to save on the overheads of the company

Types of CCTV

  • IPCCTV Runs on PoE  (Power over ethernet) transmits/receives video data over  a network. Each camera has its own unique IP address. Easy to manage online and can be viewed/ stored on cloud/hard drives. Does not need a main power supply. Uses a NVR (Network video recorder)
  • Wireless CCTV uses battery power, and WiFi signal, easy to install and change position, not great as permanent fixture as needs battery maintenance and can drop out due to WiFi coverage
  • Wired CCTV mains power supply coax back to DVR recorder. Can be attached to router to transmit internally/ externally . Outdated and IPTV is generally cheaper as no electrician is needed to supply power feed.

Maintenance

It is essential to keep on top of the maintenance of your CCTV system so ensure no downtime. Keeping the system maintained can also save money in the long run as it keeps it healthy and unlikely to break causing high repair fees.

  • Clean camera lenses ensures a clear crisp recording so it doesn’t obscure any details
  • Check cabling from damage Regular checking for this can prevent downtime by proactively fixing the damage before it completely breaks
  • Label CCTV cameras If you do have a CCTV camera go offline and isn’t labelled, it can be difficult to locate in the field. By labelling each CCTV camera and on the software, as soon as it goes down you can tell where it is, and quickly get it fixed/replaced
